Healing begins when we feel safe, understood, and empowered to explore our inner world.
About Therapist Tanya Kansal
Hi there! I’m Tanya. I’m deeply passionate about my work because I believe in the power of healing, growth, and transformation. I know that happens most effectively when we feel safe, comfortable and unconditionally supported.
Before becoming a therapist, I spent 14 years as a lawyer, working across the political, private, and public sectors. While that work was rewarding, I always felt a pull toward understanding the inner workings of the human experience. After years of reflection, I’m thrilled to have found my true calling in therapy. My background in law taught me valuable lessons about resilience, problem-solving, and navigating complex systems — all of which inform my current approach with clients.
As the child of Indian immigrants, I’m especially passionate about helping people navigate the complexities of cultural expectations, family dynamics, and the impact these have on our relationships and sense of self. I’m committed to creating a space where we can explore these challenges with compassion and curiosity.
Education and Experience as a Therapist
I hold a Master’s degree in Social Work from Rutgers University School of Social Work, a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Brown University, and a JD from Columbia Law School. I’m trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and incorporate principles from Internal Family Systems (IFS) into my practice, along with mindfulness techniques to help promote emotional regulation.
I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals from a variety of backgrounds—men, women, and nonbinary folks of different ages, races, and cultures. Whether clients are facing acute crises, chronic trauma, or navigating life transitions like career changes, divorce, or parenthood, I’m here to support them in finding clarity and healing.

Beyond the Therapy Room

Originally from New Jersey, I’ve called the DMV home for over ten years now — and I’m proud to say it really feels like home. I’m the mom of two energetic young boys who keep me on my toes and always bring a smile to my face.
When I’m not working, you’ll likely find me reading, catching up on TV shows, going for long walks, or diving into a new cooking project to unwind.
I’m excited to meet you and to begin working together toward your goals!
