Many people wait until something feels โwrongโ before they seek mental health support. But mental health is just like physical health; it benefits from regular check-ins and preventative care.ย
The MCCC Mental Wellness Check offers an opportunity to preventatively assess your emotional and psychological well-being. We provide a structured opportunity to step back and assess how youโre doing emotionally, psychologically, and socially. Think of it like an annual mental health checkup: a chance to establish a baseline, reflect on current stressors, and gain professional insight into your overall well-being.
What Is a Mental Wellness Check?
A Mental Wellness Check is a comprehensive, one-time mental health consultation designed to provide a snapshot of your current mental and emotional well-being.
Before your appointment, you will complete a set of standardized mental health questionnaires that help provide an initial overview of areas such as mood, stress, coping, and overall functioning.

During the 90-minute session, a licensed clinician will review your responses and guide a structured conversation exploring important aspects of your biopsychosocial functioning, which may include:
- Emotional well-being and mood
- Stress and coping strategies
- Sleep and lifestyle patterns
- Relationships and social supports
- Work, school, or life satisfaction
- Current challenges or transitions
The purpose of this process is to identify patterns, strengths, and potential areas for growth, and to offer guidance that may help support your mental wellness moving forward.
What Happens After the Session?
Within three business days, you will receive a written summary with personalized recommendations based on the information discussed during your Mental Wellness Check. Recommendations may include:
- Mental wellness and lifestyle strategies
- Suggestions for strengthening coping skills
- Educational resources or tools
- Recommendations for therapy or additional services if appropriate
- Referrals to providers within or outside of Montgomery County Counseling Center
Many people find that this process provides clarity, validation, and practical direction for maintaining their mental health.

FAQs about the MCCC Wellness Check
Is a Mental Wellness Check the same as therapy?
No. A Mental Wellness Check is a one-time consultation designed to provide insight and recommendations about your current mental health and well-being. While many of the topics discussed may be similar to what might come up in therapy, the purpose of this service is to evaluate your current functioning and offer guidance, rather than to begin an ongoing therapeutic process or relationship. If you and your clinician determine that therapy could be helpful, you are welcome to explore ongoing services at Montgomery County Counseling Center or with another provider.
Will I receive a diagnosis?
Not necessarily. The Mental Wellness Check is not a formal diagnostic evaluation or psychological assessment. The goal is to provide a snapshot of your current mental health, identify potential areas of concern, and offer thoughtful recommendations.
In some cases, you may leave the session with possible diagnostic considerations to explore further, or with reassurance that certain concerns may not appear clinically significant at this time. If a more comprehensive evaluation or diagnostic assessment would be helpful, your clinician may recommend appropriate next steps.
Can this be used for school, work, legal, or disability documentation?
No. The written summary provided after a Mental Wellness Check is for personal insight and guidance. It is not a formal psychological report and should not be used for legal, academic, employment, disability, or insurance determinations.
What happens if therapy is recommended?
Some clients find that the Mental Wellness Check provides enough clarity and direction on its own. Others may benefit from additional support. If your recommendations include therapy and youโd like additional support, we can guide you in exploring options at Montgomery County Counseling Center or refer you to other providers. You would arrange any ongoing therapy services separately.
What if Iโm experiencing a mental health crisis?
The Mental Wellness Check is not a crisis or emergency service. If you are experiencing an immediate mental health emergency or safety concern, please contact emergency services, a crisis hotline, or another appropriate emergency resource.
How often should someone schedule a Mental Wellness Check?
Many people find it helpful to think of a Mental Wellness Check in a similar way to an annual physical exam for their mental health. Some individuals choose to schedule a check-in once a year as part of maintaining their overall well-being, while others may seek one during periods of transition, increased stress, or major life changes.
There is no required schedule โ the purpose of this service is simply to provide a structured opportunity to reflect on your mental health and receive professional guidance whenever it feels helpful.
Take Time to Check on Your Mental Well-Being
Think of this as your annual check-up for the mind: a simple, structured, and personalized way to stay on top of your mental health. Receive a clear, supportive overview along with individualized recommendations based on your current needs.
