Mental Wellness Check

You don’t have to wait for something to feel wrong to check in on your mental health.

Maybe things are mostly fine, but you’re in a stressful stretch and want to get ahead of it. Maybe you’ve been through a big change and want a professional read on where you actually stand. Maybe you just want the equivalent of an annual physical, but for your mind.

The MCCC Mental Wellness Check is a one-time, structured consultation designed to give you a clear snapshot of your current emotional and psychological well-being, with personalized, written recommendations you can act on.

What Is a Mental Wellness Check?

A Mental Wellness Check is a comprehensive, one-time mental health consultation designed to give you a clear picture of where you are right now: emotionally, psychologically, and socially.

Before your appointment, you’ll complete a short set of questionnaires that give your clinician an initial picture of things like mood, stress, coping, and overall functioning.

During a 90-minute session, a licensed clinician will review your responses and guide a structured conversation covering the areas most relevant to you. This may include:

  • Emotional well-being and mood
  • Stress and coping strategies
  • Sleep and lifestyle patterns
  • Relationships and social supports
  • Work, school, or life satisfaction
  • Current challenges or transitions

The goal isn’t to diagnose. It’s to understand what’s working, what to watch, and what might be worth paying attention to going forward.

What Happens After the Session?

Within three business days, you’ll receive a written summary with personalized recommendations. Depending on what comes up, those might include:

  • Mental wellness and lifestyle strategies
  • Suggestions for strengthening coping skills
  • Educational resources or tools
  • Recommendations for therapy or additional services if appropriate
  • Referrals to providers within or outside of Montgomery County Counseling Center

Many people find that the process brings clarity, validation, and a concrete sense of direction, whether that leads to ongoing support or simply a clearer picture of where they stand.

FAQs about the MCCC Wellness Check

Is a Mental Wellness Check the same as therapy?

No. A Mental Wellness Check is a one-time consultation focused on giving you insight and recommendations about your current mental health, not beginning an ongoing therapeutic process. Many of the topics may overlap with what comes up in therapy, but the purpose here is evaluation and guidance, not treatment. If therapy seems like it would help, you’re welcome to explore that at MCCC or elsewhere, but it’s always your call.

Will I receive a diagnosis?

Not necessarily. This is not a formal diagnostic evaluation or psychological assessment. The goal is a clear snapshot of your current mental health, not a clinical label.

In some cases, your clinician may note possible areas to explore further or reassure you that certain concerns don’t appear clinically significant. If a more thorough evaluation would be useful, they’ll let you know.

Is this just a funnel into therapy?

No. The Mental Wellness Check is designed to stand on its own. “You’re doing well and here’s what to keep doing” is a completely valid and common outcome. If therapy comes up as a recommendation, it’s because it genuinely seems useful, not because that’s the goal of the session.

Can this be used for school, work, legal, or disability documentation?

No. The written summary is for your personal use and insight. It is not a formal psychological report and should not be used for legal, academic, employment, disability, or insurance purposes.

What happens if therapy is recommended?

Some people find the Mental Wellness Check gives them exactly what they need on its own. Others find that it clarifies that more support would help. Either is fine. If therapy is recommended and you want to pursue it, we can help you figure out next steps, whether at MCCC or with another provider.

How often should someone schedule a Mental Wellness Check?

There’s no set schedule. Many people think of it like an annual physical: a once-a-year check-in on their mental health. Others schedule one during a particularly stressful period or big life transition, and some come back after completing a course of therapy. Use it when it makes sense for you.

What if Iโ€™m experiencing a mental health crisis?

The Mental Wellness Check is not a crisis or emergency service. If you are experiencing an immediate mental health emergency or safety concern, please contact emergency services, a crisis hotline, or another appropriate emergency resource.
