About Therapist Jess Quaranto

Hi! Iโ€™m Jess Quaranto, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) at Montgomery County Counseling Center. My approach to clinical practice is informed by over a decade of education and experience in the field and, just as importantly, by the many different roles Iโ€™ve held before and after becoming a counselor โ€“ as a parent, teacher, mediator, community organizer, and basketball coach.

I view therapy as a journey we take together. Iโ€™ve had the honor of walking alongside individuals and families at all stages of life, from young children to great-grandparents (though I have a special place in my heart for teens and their caregivers). I believe everyone has the ability to grow and transform in an empathetic, grounded space. My goal is to provide that space and foster a therapeutic relationship built on trust and mutual accountability.

For Adults Considering Therapy

Managing relationships, raising children, or caring for elders can feel overwhelming โ€“ and just when you think youโ€™ve figured it out, something changes! It can also be a journey filled with joy, laughter, and self-discovery. Letโ€™s navigate the ups and downs together, helping you build the stability and resilience to stay grounded and support the people you love.ย

For Children Considering Therapy

People might expect a lot from you, and it can feel like no one really understands. If we work together, know that you never have to answer a question you donโ€™t want to. I actually appreciate the phrase โ€œI donโ€™t knowโ€ because it shows honesty โ€“ whether it means you donโ€™t have an answer or have too many to put into words. Saying โ€œIโ€™m not ready yetโ€ is just as powerful; it means youโ€™re thoughtful about what and when you share.

You also donโ€™t have to dive right into the reason why youโ€™re starting therapy. Actually, you donโ€™t have to talk at all. Therapy can be about making art, playing music, collaging, or shooting baskets on the mini hoop in my office. Bring what feels good to you, and weโ€™ll start from there.

Above all else, I am committed to learning about and dismantling pervasive systems of oppression. As a counselor, I routinely seek out training to de-colonize my own practice and learn to hold space for others to explore the pain caused by structures of injustice against marginalized communities. Even with regular self-reflection and consultation, I admit to making mistakes and sincerely welcome feedback so I can continue to grow.

Education and Experience as a Therapist

I earned my Masterโ€™s in Counseling Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and spent many years providing child and family therapy, including running therapeutic groups for children, teens, parents, caregivers, and teachers. I continue this work today by facilitating support groups for early childhood educators and staff in Washington, D.C.

Using a client-centered/humanistic approach to therapy, I often find that child-centered play therapy provides a strong foundation for building a meaningful therapeutic relationship. My background includes extensive training in Relationship Enhancement Therapy, Filial Family Therapy, and Sand Tray Therapy. I also incorporate expressive arts, which can be a powerful alternative to traditional talk therapy.

Outside of the Therapy Room

Originally from outside Chicago, I still call soda what it should be called – โ€œpopโ€ – even though the D.C. area has been my home since 2008. When Iโ€™m not cooking, crocheting, singing or writing, you can find me on the basketball court looking for a pick-up game or coaching one of my two kids (both of whom, to my dismay, are currently more passionate about soccer). Iโ€™m also an avid reader and have been known to drop everything when a good dystopian fantasy trilogy pulls me in. My partner and I have had an ongoing Scrabble rivalry, and I love games of all kinds.ย

Beyond my work at MCCC, I help facilitate an educational cooperative, where I also teach classes like math and creative writing. Iโ€™m committed to building and supporting mutual aid networks in Silver Spring and Takoma Park, working to create a stronger, more connected community where my family and neighbors can thrive together.
